Former Manchester United attacker Lee Sharpe has told Sports Mole that the Red Devils must sign a new goalkeeper before the end of the summer transfer window if they are to have a successful campaign.
Altay Bayindir and Andre Onana have shared the gloves in the early stages of the 2025-26 campaign, but neither player has looked convincing between the sticks.
Onana had a difficult night against Grimsby Town in the EFL Cup last week, with the Cameroon international at fault for both of the League Two outfit's goals in normal time, and he then only managed to keep out one of the 12 penalties that he faced in the shootout.
Bayindir has played all three of the team's Premier League matches this season, but he has also struggled, and Man United are said to be working to sign a new stopper before Monday's deadline.
Sharpe, who played for Man United between 1988 and 1996, said that it is "paramount" for his former side to sign a new goalkeeper, while he also talked-up the need for a new central midfielder.
Lammens, Martinez 'on Man United's radar' ahead of deadline
The Red Devils were heavily linked with Brighton & Hove Albion's Carlos Baleba earlier this summer, but it eventually became clear that a move for the Cameroon international in this window would be too expensive.
However, Man United have not ruled out making a midfield addition before the market closes.
"Goalkeeper is paramount. I also like Baleba at Brighton, he would be a great addition to the squad, but 100% a goalkeeper is needed," Sharpe told Sports Mole.
Royal Antwerp's Senne Lammens is Man United's leading target between the sticks, with the 23-year-old regarded as one of the most highly-rated young goalkeepers in world football.
However, it is understood that the 20-time English champions have also reignited their interest in Aston Villa's Emiliano Martinez, having been linked with the Argentina international earlier this summer.
Man United will allegedly move for Martinez if talks for Lammens break down.
Man United 'lining up' £40m Martinez bid
According to The Mirror, Man United are willing to pay £40m for Martinez, viewing him as the ideal character to take on the challenge of being the club's number one goalkeeper during a turbulent period.
Martinez, who is a World Cup winner with Argentina, has made 213 appearances for Villa since his arrival from Arsenal in the summer of 2020, keeping 70 clean sheets in the process.
The 32-year-old missed Villa's opening match of the 2025-26 Premier League season through suspension, but he was back between the sticks against Brentford.
Villa head coach Unai Emery now has a major decision to make for Sunday night's league clash against Crystal Palace, especially as new arrival Marco Bizot impressed between the sticks on the opening weekend of the new Premier League campaign against Newcastle United.
Lee Sharpe was speaking to Sports Mole on behalf of William Hill.
