La Liga president Javier Tebas has revealed that he would have liked to see Wayne Rooney play in Spain's top flight.
Rooney, 30, has previously been linked with the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid, but it is now seen as unlikely that the Manchester United captain will ply his trade in Spain at this stage of his career.
Tebas has called the England captain, whose form has been criticised in the early part of this season, "a Premier League icon".
"I'd like to have seen Rooney play in Spain. I'd like to have seen a Premier League icon play in our league," Tebas told AS.
Rooney has only scored twice in 11 league appearances for Man United this season.
