Peter Schmeichel: 'David de Gea must improve his concentration'

Peter Schmeichel: 'De Gea must concentrate more'

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel believes that David de Gea must improve his concentration after the Spaniard made another mistake at the weekend.

De Gea has won Manchester United's player of the season award in four of his last six seasons at Old Trafford after joining the club from Atletico Madrid in 2011 but has seen his form dip since the 2018 World Cup.

The 29-year-old was at fault for Everton's goal in the 1-1 draw at Goodison Park on Sunday when his clearing kick rebounded off Dominic Calvert-Lewin and into the net.

Schmeichel believes that De Gea's mistake could have easily been avoided and that he must work on improving his concentration if he is to return to his best form.

The Dane told Premier League productions: "I think he believes he has more time. He does have options, he should just pass it back to Maguire and you start again.

"You could give it to Lindelof there and Matic is always available. He doesn't realise how close (Calvert-Lewin) gets - it's a lack of concentration.

"For top clubs, the way to win the championships is not to give anything away easily - you don't do that. In seven games, seven mistakes have led to loss of points, that's far too many.

"That's too much for a top club and that's something that De Gea needs to get out of his game. He needs better concentration."

United have conceded the second-fewest number of goals (30) of any club outside the top four in the Premier League and currently sit fifth in the table, three points off fourth-placed Chelsea.
