Man United vs. Sunderland: Under-pressure head coach Ruben Amorim receives much-needed boost ahead of Old Trafford showdown

Amorim receives much-needed boost ahead of crucial Sunderland showdown

Amad Diallo was back in training with Manchester United on Wednesday, with the Ivory Coast international in line to feature in Saturday's Premier League contest with Sunderland.

The versatile attacker was not involved in Man United's 3-1 defeat to Brentford last time out following a family bereavement, with Red Devils head coach Ruben Amorim addressing his absence during his pre-match press conference.

"Someone in his family passed away, so we are giving all the support to Amad. We understood it was important to him to have his time. We are here for him," Amorim told reporters.

At the time, it was unclear when the 23-year-old would return, but he was back in training on Wednesday and is therefore expected to be in the squad against Sunderland.

Amad has provided one assist in six appearances for Man United this season, being used as both a number 10 and a wing-back, and he could be in contention to replace Diogo Dalot down the right on Saturday.

Amad, Malacia train with Man United on Wednesday

Tyrell Malacia, meanwhile, is also back in first-team training with Man United.

The Netherlands international spent the second half of last season on loan at PSV Eindhoven, but the Dutch outfit turned down the chance to sign him on a permanent basis.

Malacia was heavily linked with a summer departure, with a switch to Turkey thought to be close at one stage, but he remained with the 20-time English champions past the transfer deadline.

The left-back made 39 appearances for the Red Devils during the 2022-23 season, but he missed the entire 2023-24 campaign with a serious knee injury, which required two separate operations.

Malacia is now seemingly an option for Amorim, although Man United already have Patrick Dorgu and Diego Leon as options in that area of the field.

Casemiro will also return against Sunderland

Casemiro missed out against Brentford last time out through suspension, but the Brazilian will also be back in the fold for the contest with Sunderland at Old Trafford.

Man United will definitely be without the services of two senior players against the Black Cats, though, with Lisandro Martinez not yet ready to return from a long-term knee problem, while Noussair Mazraoui has a muscular issue which will sideline him until after the October international break.
