Preview: Lyngby Boldklub vs. Copenhagen - prediction, form guide, head to head

Sports Mole previews Monday's Danish top-flight clash between Lyngby Boldklub and Copenhagen, including predictions, form guide and head-to-head records.

Copenhagen will be looking to keep their slim Danish Superliga title hopes alive when they return to top-flight action with a trip to Lyngby Boldklub on Monday.

The reigning champions suffered a shock defeat in their last outing and are 12 points off leaders Midtjylland, while Lyngby are down in ninth place.

Copenhagen have had nearly three months to stew on their their shock 1-0 loss at home to Horsens, a result that all but ended their hopes of catching Midtjylland.

Stale Solbakken's men started their title defence strongly and were top with seven rounds of matches played, but they have since drifted and have been unable to keep pace with the leaders.

The visitors won just one of their last four matches prior to the coronavirus-enforced shutdown, losing to Esbjerg and Horsens, as well as drawing with bottom side Silkeborg.

They still have a slim chance of finishing above Midtjylland, although for that to happen they will need to be near enough perfect from now until the end of the campaign.

Copenhagen have one more regular-season fixture to play after this trip to Lyngby - a home match against Randers next weekend - before the division is split into two.

The points from the regular season carry over to the championship round, so the best case scenario for the 13-time Danish champions is to close the gap on Midtjylland to six points.

Lyngby will be out to inflict further damage on Copenhagen's title hopes, though, as they jostle for position in the bottom half of the division.

The Royal Blues cannot finish any higher than seventh, meaning that they will contest in the relegation round.

That could still offer a route into the Europa League playoffs, so Christian Nielsen's side will be just as focused as their opponents to take something from Monday's clash.

Lyngby have a good record at home of late, too, winning four matches in a five-game unbeaten run stretching back to mid-October.

Copenhagen, by comparison, have won only two of their last eight away matches - losing five of those - which goes a long way to explaining why they are so far adrift of top spot.

Head To Head

Copenhagen were 2-0 winners in the reverse fixture nearly 10 months ago thanks to a couple of second-half goals from Jonas Wind.

In fact, Monday's visitors have won 21 of the last 23 meetings between the sides, with the only defeats in that run coming in back-to-back matches in 2017.

We say: Lyngby Boldklub 0-2 Copenhagen

On the back of a disappointing set of results prior to the two-month hiatus, this is a good first game back for Copenhagen. The reigning champions' crown is slipping, but they will not give up until it is over and recent meetings between the sides suggests that they should get the job done on Monday.
