Virgil van Dijk transfer latest: Should Liverpool captain leave for European giant to boost his legacy?

Virgil van Dijk is set to leave Liverpool at the end of the season upon the expiry of his contract, and he could reportedly join one of Europe's elite teams.

Paris Saint-Germain have been touted as a possible destination for Liverpool centre-back Virgil van Dijk, who is currently set to leave the club for free in the summer.

Van Dijk led his side out at Wembley against Newcastle United on Sunday but his team suffered a 2-1 defeat in the EFL Cup final, with the Magpies deserving winners.

The Dutchman will almost certainly end the campaign with a Premier League winner's medal given the Reds are 12 points ahead of second-placed Arsenal in the Premier League.

However, with no resolution in sight in regard to a contract extension, Van Dijk's departure from Anfield in the summer upon the expiry of his contract looks increasingly likely.

Fichajes claim that Paris Saint-Germain boss Luis Enrique is keen to strengthen his side's defence with a top-level signing, and that his main target is Van Dijk.

What could Van Dijk achieve at PSG?

PSG beat Liverpool 4-1 on penalties at Anfield on March 11 in their Champions League round of 16 clash after winning 1-0 in regular time.

Though the Reds were arguably the better team at home, they were thoroughly outplayed by the French champions in the first leg on March 5, though the Merseysiders emerged as 1-0 winners on the night thanks to Darwin Nunez physically outmatching PSG's centre-backs.

If Van Dijk was to sign for the Ligue 1 club, he would arguably address one of their only remaining weaknesses considering he is able to go toe-to-toe with physically imposing strikers.

His excellent passing range would also allow him to play directly to forwards such as Ousmane Dembele and Bradley Barcola, and it would not be surprising if he added more Champions League titles to his trophy haul should a transfer materialise.

Should Van Dijk stay at Liverpool?

Van Dijk is regarded by some as one of the best defenders to have ever played in the Premier League, and a second title with Liverpool would likely help further cement his legacy in England.

The 33-year-old has so far shown no sign of physical decline despite his age, and there is every chance that he could help guide the Reds to more trophies in the near future.

However, given Manchester City have dominated English football since 2017-18 - winning six of the last seven titles on offer - there is no guarantee that the Dutch centre-back would be able to add to his collection.

PSG have won 10 of the last 12 Ligue 1 titles and are likely to win an 11th from 13 in 2024-25, so perhaps a move to France would make sense if Van Dijk wanted to win as much as possible in the remainder of his career.
