Liverpool's Burnley win: Mohamed Salah penalty creates Premier League history after late goal at Turf Moor

History made: Salah helps Reds reach Premier League milestone against Burnley

Liverpool became the first side in Premier League history to win four consecutive matches thanks to goals scored in the final 10 minutes or late when they beat Burnley 1-0 on Sunday.

It looked certain that the Reds would drop points, but a 95th-minute penalty from Mohamed Salah ensured that the club maintained their perfect start to the campaign.

Arne Slot's side created relatively few chances throughout the match, but the winger's strike continued the club's trend of finding late winners.

Liverpool netted the winning goals against Bournemouth and Arsenal after the 80th minute, while their decisive strike against Newcastle United came in the 10th minute of second-half stoppage time.

Since the 2022-23 season, Liverpool have scored 34 goals after the 80th minute, more than any other team in the Premier League.

Can Liverpool win the Premier League title without improving?

Liverpool are unlikely to claim the title if they continue to rely on late strikes as it is not sustainable to expect the likes of Salah to produce moments of magic at the end of games throughout the season.

Title rivals Arsenal have often been criticised for relying too heavily on set pieces to get them over the line, but the same can be said of Liverpool and scoring late in matches.

Having said that, consistently finding ways to win should never be seen as a negative, especially for clubs with ambitions of major silverware.

Slot will hope that his side can make games more straightforward, but he will see his team's ability to get positive results despite not playing well as a sign of champions.

How can Arne Slot improve Liverpool's performances?

Though the club's displays must improve, they have already played Arsenal, Newcastle and Bournemouth, three of the most aggressive and intense teams in the division.

Facing challenging opponents cannot excuse the subpar displays of the likes of Florian Wirtz and Salah, though perhaps the forwards will perform better when striker Alexander Isak claims a starting spot.

Midfielder Alexis Mac Allister has also struggled with fitness issues this term - his was unable to play much of a role in pre-season - and he could make more of an impact once he gets over his injury woes.

After a summer of upheaval, it is no surprise that the players are taking some time to become accustomed to each other, but they must start showing signs of improvement if they are to retain their Premier League crown.
