Gary Neville backs Mike Phelan for Hull City job

Gary Neville offers his support for Mike Phelan to take on the vacant managerial position at Hull City due to his hunger for the job.

Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has told Hull City that it would be the "perfect time" to appoint Mike Phelan as the club's new manager.

The 53-year-old is currently in temporary charge of the Tigers following Steve Bruce's decision to step down from his position last month.

Phelan has made no secret of the fact that he would take on the job full time if asked, but is 'uncertain' whether City chiefs will look to bring in a new face in the coming days, with Wales's Chris Coleman thought to have been approached.

Neville, who worked with Phelan during his time at Old Trafford, believes that he is the perfect man for the job with time ticking down to make an appointment.

"He's wanted to take that top job [at Hull]," he told Sky Sports News. "This is a good opportunity for him. He knows the players well so he's not going into a job that he has to get used to them. He knows them and that's a massive positive for him and I wish him all the very best.

"He's got a lot of experience working at Manchester United and he's a number two so it's perfect timing for him to go on his own, he's always wanted to do it. He knows the players, he knows the club very well so I think that's a big headstart."

Phelan spent 14 years at United before departing the club and taking on backroom roles at Norwich City and Hull.
