Martyn Waghorn stars in comfortable Rangers win at Greenock Morton

Martyn Waghorn scores a hat-trick as Rangers ease to a comfortable win away at Greenock Morton.

Martyn Waghorn has scored a hat-trick for Rangers, who cruised to their eighth league victory of the season at Greenock Morton.

The Blues, looking to preserve their 100% start in the Scottish Championship after being knocked out of the League Cup by St Johnstone in midweek, were awarded an early penalty at Cappielow Park after Ross Forbes brought down Nathan Oduwa.

Waghorn then steered his spot kick beyond the reach of Morton keeper Derek Gaston, to give Mark Warburton's men the lead.

On 22 minutes, Rangers scored a second after Waghorn stroked his effort across the face of Gaston's goal and into the bottom corner of the net, to the delight of the away supporters who made the short journey up the banks of the River Clyde.

The league leaders seemed to have wrapped up victory before the interval as right-back James Tavernier popped up to score his eighth goal since joining the Glasgow giants in the summer.

Birmingham City loanee Denny Johnstone looked to pull a goal back for Morton as he beat his marker on the flank, but his cross evaded everyone as Rangers escaped.

Midway through the second half, the Gers nearly added a fourth when Kenny Miller brought a flying stop out of Gaston.

However, Waghorn managed to complete his first senior hat-trick in the dying minutes as Morton failed to clear Tavernier's cross before the ex-Wigan Athletic forward netted from an acute angle.
