No explosives found at German football stadium

German police confirm that no explosives were found at the HDI Arena in Hannover.

Hannover police have confirmed that no explosives were found in or around the stadium where Germany were due to play the Netherlands on Tuesday evening.

The international friendly at the HDI Arena in Hannover was called off due to security fears, but a search of the ground did not uncover any suspicious items.

"Since the cancellation of the match, there were several checks of suspicious items," read a statement from Hannover police, issued late on Tuesday night.

"No explosives were found. In the central station, a suspicious item was demolished for security reasons. As matters stand, there were no explosives in this item as well."

The match was cancelled following reports of a possible attempt to smuggle explosives into the stadium.

This week's international fixtures were on high alert in the wake of the recent terrorist attacks in France, which left 129 dead and many more injured.
