Klinsmann: Dempsey should play in Champions League

United States head coach Jurgen Klinsmann has said that he hopes Clint Dempsey can seal a move to a Champions League club this summer.

Dempsey, 29, had an impressive season with Fulham this year, netting 17 times for the Cottagers and has recently expressed his desire to play at the top European level.

Former Tottenham Hotspur striker Klinsmann told reporters: "If you play consistently at the highest level then offers will come in. I think everybody is aware of that. His goal is the right goal, we have often discussed it.

"If he has the opportunity to go to a Champions League team, that's the crème de la crème of club soccer then you have to do that, with all the respect obviously to Fulham, as he often mentions."

The German coach added: "If it doesn't happen then he has to keep pounding away and knocking at the door."

Klinsmann, 47, also said the attacking midfielder will not feature against Scotland in Jacksonville this evening as he recovers from a groin injury but is hopeful he will feature in Wednesday's friendly against Brazil.
