Chelmsford City sign John Sands

Former Canvey Island striker John Sands completes a switch to Conference South outfit Chelmsford City.

Conference South side Chelmsford City have completed the signing of John Sands.

The 27-year-old had been available for a short period of time following his exit from Ryman Premier Division outfit Canvey Island, who agreed to cancel the striker's contract by mutual consent last week.

It is believed that Sands requires a double hernia operation, which could keep him out of action for up to two months.

However, upon his return to fitness, the centre-forward will turn out for 14th-placed Chelmsford, despite reported interest from Football Conference club Forest Green Rovers.

"I am pleased to announce that I have signed a deal with Chelmsford City this evening and am very pleased," Sands wrote on Twitter.

The former Bury Town man scored 24 goals in 47 outings for Canvey.
