How sportsmen can deal with loneliness

Loneliness is something that can affect every single one of us whether we are ordinary human beings or professional sportsmen. A good example of feeling a sense of isolation and loneliness is Michael Phelps, the legendary American swimmer who battled depression while being at the peak of his career. It does not really matter whether you are an NBA star, an elite triathlete or a champion golfer; every human is prone to feeling a sense of depression and loneliness even as overachievers in their respective sporting disciplines. The key to battling that sense of isolation or loneliness is first identifying the underlying cause and then finding ways to overcome it. While most cases of loneliness can be handled by making changes in our lives and routines, other more serious psychological conditions might need professional help. A few ways by which to overcome loneliness and lead a more emotionally fulfilling life include:

Become more socially active: A lot of us tend to feel a sense of loneliness when we begin to spend increasing periods of time alone. While every one of us needs our own personal space and some quiet moments to reflect, spending too much time by ourselves can be detrimental to our emotional well-being. The key is to become more socially active. For those individuals that do not have a companion or are too shy to approach one for a date, online dating is the ideal solution.

For sportsmen (particularly those that are famous) finding a partner while keeping their anonymity is important. Since it is relatively easier to break the ice with someone new online than in actual life, chat rooms are a fun way to connect with new people. For those that find it a challenge to share their emotions, chatting anonymously with someone that does not know you personally is definitely an advantage. Joining a chat room could be one of the easiest ways by which lonely sportsmen can find friends or even someone they can begin to date. Chat rooms are really popular in the UK and living here allows you to join different chat rooms with locals. This can be a great advantage in case you are looking for a date. UK chat rooms cater to a wide variety of dating niches. Discreet and easy to communicate with a wide variety of partners makes it ideal for sportsmen to connect with other people online. Besides, they are free to join and offer an opportunity to develop a long term relationship, features that make them a major draw with people looking to date online.

Get a furry friend: One of the most effective ways to battle loneliness and feelings of isolation is to get a pet. A furry friend whether a dog or cat or any other pet animal you fancy can make a world of difference in one's life. Studies and research have shown that people with pets lead happier and more emotionally satisfying lives. Animals have a wonderful inherent instinct of judging human emotions and feelings and are the best partners we can have at home for companionship. Just watching them up to their crazy antics or petting them is a great stress buster and has a calming effect on the mind. When you have a pet at home it can considerably help to relieve stress and anxiety, the primary causes of feeling lonely and depressed.

Spend less time alone: As mentioned earlier, while we need some time to be by ourselves it should not become habitual and lead to us shunning human company. If you do not have anyone at home with plenty of time to yourself, take up a hobby or activity, where you can be with others. From joining a fitness class or a social welfare group as a volunteer, ensure that you spend maximum time in the company of others. The more time you spend in the company of like-minded people the better. Taking up meditation is also a great way to fight depression and loneliness.

Limit the use of social media: While social media is great to connect with people, it also is conversely alienating us from the company of other people. Virtual communication is not the same as being in the company of people and socialising and doing things together. Whether it is Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram or a whole slew of other social media platforms, these only serve as a distraction from building normal healthy relationships with actual people. The key is to use social media to stay connected, but do not let it take up valuable time to spend with other people in the actual living world. The virtual world is no match for human company!

These are just a few of the many ways by which sportsmen, women or just ordinary people can learn to cope with feelings of loneliness. At the end of the day, it is having a positive attitude and learning to identify the factors that make us feel lonely and dealing with them that can make all the difference in our lives.
