7 sides to look out for in the FA Cup first-round draw

A closer look at some of the sides in the pot for Monday night.

The draw for the FA Cup first round takes place on Monday and will feature a whole host of non-league sides who made it through the fourth qualifying round.

Here, Press Association Sport looks at a selection of the teams who will be in the pot and some of the individuals involved at those clubs.

Metropolitan Police – Southern League Premier Division South

Nickname: Blues

Twitter followers: 3,815

The Metropolitan Police have equalled their best ever FA Cup run by knocking out National League side Havant and Waterlooville. A stunning Jack Mazzone strike grabbed the win.

Established in 1919, the team was originally made up of serving members of the Metropolitan Police. That is no longer the case due to the issues with a whole squad of police officers having time off at the same time.

The side made up of a whole manner of professions. But manager Gavin Macpherson, appointed in the summer after over 20 years with the club as a player and coach, has Football League pedigree including starting out with Nottingham Forest.

Haringey Borough – Isthmian League Premier Division

Nickname: The Borough

Twitter followers: 2,431

Two goals in the last 15 minutes saw Haringey to a 2-1 win over fellow seventh tier side Poole Town to reach the first round for the first time in their history.

Much of the attention in the area goes to neighbours Tottenham, but Haringey take great pride in pointing out they are the only club on White Hart Lane.

“A bus stop in Tottenham, we’re just a bus stop in Tottenham” was the chant that accompanied their win over Poole.

Taunton Town – Southern League Premier Division South

Nickname: Peacocks

Twitter followers: 8,057

Taunton are in the draw for the first round after holding big-spending National League South side Billericay Town to a 2-2 draw. Taunton’s Matt Wright missed a penalty that would have sent them through.

Chairman Kevin Sturmey is clearly very hands-on at the seventh-tier club, also taking on the roles of chief executive and head groundsman.

Hampton and Richmond Borough – National League South

Nickname: The Beavers

Twitter followers: 6,301

Hampton made it through to the first round proper for the first time since 2007 by beating National League side Eastleigh 1-0 away from home.

The winner came from striker Chris Dickson. The 33-year-old striker has played for a host of Football League clubs, including Charlton, as well as multiple Cypriot sides. He also has two caps for Ghana, making his Black Stars debut in 2008.

Slough Town – National League South

Nickname: The Rebels

Twitter followers: 11,000

Slough are bidding for another cup run having reached the second round last season, losing on TV to League One Rochdale.

The sixth-tier side beat Eastbourne to reach the first round proper, with Ben Harris producing a strike that will be hard to beat as goal of the tournament.

Harris joined the club in December last year from Ascot United. He had played his football in New Zealand’s top tier for the previous two seasons with Team Wellington and Miramar Rangers.

Hitchin Town – Evostik Southern Premier Division Central

Nickname: Canaries

Twitter followers: 9,042

Hitchin will be in the draw for the first round after drawing 1-1 with fellow seventh-tier club Leatherhead and will now face a replay.

Captain Josh Bickerstaff equalised with a penalty. He is a teacher by profession who has been playing his football for Hitchin since 2011.

York City – National League North

Nickname: Minstermen

Twitter followers: 48,926

York knocked out fellow National League North side Blyth Spartans to reach the first round. The Minstermen dropped out of the Football League in 2016, suffering back-to-back relegations to fall to the sixth tier.

City made the FA Cup semi-finals in 1955, losing out to Newcastle.

Striker Jon Parkin is a well-known name. He spent two years at Bootham Crescent from 2002, before progressing to play for the likes of Hull, Preston, Stoke and Cardiff in the Football League. ‘The Beast’ scored his 200th career goal last season.
