Wayne Rooney: 'We have top players coming through for England'

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney hails the emergence of several players for the England national team.

Wayne Rooney has dismissed suggestions that England are not creating enough talented home-grown players.

The Manchester United striker, who was part of the Three Lions' 4-1 win against Montenegro on Friday, believes that as many as eight players are emerging for the national team.

"We have got some very exciting players, young exciting players," Rooney told reporters. "I think all the talk about 'there's not enough good English players' - well, we have got six, seven or eight young players.

"Andros Townsend did great - he's an exciting player with a great future - and then you have Danny Welbeck, Daniel Sturridge, Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, Jack Wilshere, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Theo Walcott - the players we have got there, there's some talent."

Victory against Poland on Tuesday will see England qualify for the World Cup.
