Team News: Harry Kane leads England line against Russia as Jamie Vardy among substitutes

Vardy on bench as Kane leads England line

Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy has been named on the bench for England's Euro 2016 Group B opener against Russia as Tottenham Hotspur forward Harry Kane leads the Three Lions line in Marseille.

Roy Hodgson lines up his starting XI in a 4-3-3 formation, with Adam Lallana and Raheem Sterling operating wide of lone forward Kane.

Skipper Wayne Rooney, meanwhile, starts in midfield alongside Eric Dier and Dele Alli, while further back, Gary Cahill will operate alongside Chris Smalling at centre-back.

For Russia, experienced goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev starts in what is a fairly recognisable starting XI, with only Schalke 04 midfielder Roman Neustadter playing outside the nation.

Zenit Saint Petersburg's Artyom Dzyuba leads the line for Leonid Slutsky's charges, while Fyodor Smolov is set to win his 15th cap in attack.

England: Hart; Walker, Smalling, Cahill, Rose; Dier, Rooney, Alli; Lallana, Kane, Sterling

Russia: Akinfeev; Smolnikov, V.Berezutsky, Ignashevich, Schennikov; Neustadter, Golovin; Kokorin, Shatov, Smolov; Dzyuba
