Joleon Lescott hits out at Dries Mertens challenge

Lescott "gutted" for Cahill

Manchester City and England defender Joleon Lescott believes that Belgium's Dries Mertens should have been given a red card after ending Gary Cahill's Euro 2012 campaign.

The Chelsea centre-back was dropped from the Three Lions squad after suffering a broken jaw following Mertens's push on Cahill during England's 1-0 win over Belgium at Wembley on Saturday.

Lescott wrote on Twitter: "Gutted to hear Gaz is ruled out. The challenge that caused it was more reckless and dangerous than most two-footed tackles so why only yellow?"

Liverpool's Martin Kelly has been called up into Roy Hodgson's squad as a replacement.
