Chelsea defender David Luiz says that his team were "unlucky" to drop two points against Liverpool in Tuesday night's 1-1 draw at Anfield.

Chelsea defender David Luiz has claimed that his team were "unlucky" to drop two points against Liverpool in Tuesday night's Premier League clash at Anfield.

Luiz handed the league leaders a first-half lead with a free kick from distance, but Georginio Wijnaldum equalised just before the hour as Liverpool came from behind to secure a share of the spoils in a 1-1 draw.

The Brazilian centre-back was pleased that his goal made the breakthrough on the night, but has branded the draw 'a missed opportunity' after Diego Costa had a late penalty saved by Simon Mignolet.

"It is never easy to play here at Anfield and win points. We had an opportunity to win game, and we're unlucky we didn't win it. But it was a good result," Luiz told BT Sport.

"Sometimes you need to try the surprise. I'm not in the best position to take free-kicks because my knee is hurting and I can't train every day, but in a game you need to see the opportunity. I'm pleased I scored."

Despite failing to win, Chelsea have moved nine points clear at the top of the Premier League table after both Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal dropped points on Tuesday night.
