Five perfect hat-tricks

Following Steven Naismith's exploits against Chelsea, Sports Mole picks out five other players that have scored perfect hat-tricks.

Not only did Steven Naismith score all of Everton's goals in yesterday's 3-1 win over Chelsea, it was also the perfect hat-trick.

The Scottish attacker broke the deadlock at Goodison Park courtesy of a headed effort, before he doubled his and the home side's tally with a left-footed drive. He then secured the victory in the closing stages with his right foot from close range.

With that in mind, Sports Mole has picked out five other footballers that have previously matched Naismith's exploits.

1. Cristiano Ronaldo

Fresh from Spain's winter break, Real Madrid talisman Ronaldo scored a 10-minute second-half hat-trick against city rivals Getafe. His first came with the left boot after being put through by Mesut Ozil, with the second coming courtesy of a header from Angel di Maria's pinpoint cross. The trio was completed with the right boot from the penalty spot.

2. Sir Geoff Hurst

Has anybody scored a more famous perfect hat-trick? Not as far as English football is concerned. Against West Germany in the final of the World Cup at Wembley, West Ham centre-forward Hurst drew the hosts level at 1-1 with a downward header. He then put the Three Lions 3-2 in front in extra-time with a right-footed strike that crashed against the underside of the crossbar and was judged to have crossed the line by the linesman - much to the disgust and disbelief of the German players.

The most memorable goal came in the closing stages, though, as Hurst raced clear and then lashed a rising left-footed shot into the back of Hans Tilkowski's net.

3. Michel Platini

Euro 1984 belonged to Platini, who scored nine goals throughout the tournament to help hosting France triumph. Having scored a hat-trick against Belgium, the attacking midfielder followed that up next time out against Yugoslavia in a 4-2 win. His first of the evening was a sliding effort with the left foot, which was then accompanied by a diving header.

The perfect treble was then wrapped up 13 minutes from time when he nonchalantly lifted a curling free kick over the Yugoslav wall and into the far corner of the net with his right boot.

4. Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink

A number of players have scored a perfect hat-trick in the Premier League, but few have been of higher quality than what Hasselbaink produced against Tottenham Hotspur. His curling efforts from distance with either boot sandwiched a downward header that helped Chelsea to record their second 4-0 win over their London rivals in a matter of days.

5. Mike Newell

A truly miserable Champions League group campaign ended on a positive note for Blackburn Rovers and Newell as the striker scored what at the time was the competition's fastest ever hat-trick. For good measure it was the perfect treble as a long range strike with the right foot was followed up with a header and a left-footed goal - all within the space of nine minutes.
