Jonathan David, Alphonso Davies headline Canada World Cup squad

Jonathan David, Alphonso Davies headline Canada squad

John Herdman has confirmed his 26-player Canada squad for the upcoming World Cup with Alphonso Davies among the headline names.

The left-sided Bayern Munich player suffered an injury scare earlier this month, but he will be expecting to take his place in the starting lineup in Qatar.

Lille attacker Jonathan David is another player named in a talented group of forwards, which also includes Club Brugge frontman Cyle Larin.

There is only one representative who is currently representing an English club with Reading winger Junior Hoilett taking his spot in the squad.

However, Nottingham Forest defender Richie Laryea, who has been on loan at Toronto FC, is named in the group.

David Wotherspoon, who plays for Scottish Premiership side St Johnstone, has also been selected, but Wolverhampton Wanderers winger Theo Corbeanu misses out.

The most notable absentee is Toronto FC defender Doneil Henry, who sustained an injury during a warm-up fixture against Bahrain.

While the Maple Leafs possess an experienced squad, goalkeeper James Pantemis is yet to win a senior cap and Joel Waterman has just one appearance to his name.

On the flip side, captain Atiba Hutchinson will reach 100 caps if he plays in each of Canada's three group fixtures against Belgium, Croatia and Morocco.

Canada get their campaign underway with a showdown against Belgium on November 23.
