Andressa Alves strike puts Brazil into Women's World Cup last 16

Brazil are into the second round of the Women's World Cup after victory over Spain in Montreal saw them move clear at the top of Group E.

La Roja, aiming to build on a draw against Costa Rica in their opening game, had chances to take the lead as both Natalia Sanchon and Virginia Torrecilla missed the target.

The Selecao's breakthrough came seconds before the half-time whistle when Andressa Alves had an effort cleared off the line by Celia Jimenez, but the Spain defender was unable to stop the 22-year-old forward from tucking home the rebound.

Early in the second half, Brazil almost put daylight between the teams as Andressa presented Alves with a chance to score her second of the game, only for the striker to drag her attempt wide.

Andressa was again at the heart of the Selecao's attack as Marta teed up the midfielder and she forced Ainhoa Tirapu to tip over her own crossbar.

Brazil continued to create goalscoring opportunities, but were unable to take them, with Formiga stabbing a shot wide of the left post from close range.

However, the South American side were able to hold on for a victory that secures their passage into the last 16.
