Preview: Brann Women vs. Slavia Prague Women - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Wednesday's Women's Champions League clash between Brann Women and Slavia Prague Women, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

On Wednesday, Brann Women will be looking to claim a second straight victory in the Women's Champions League group stage when they face Slavia Prague Women in Bergen.

The visitors, meanwhile, will be hoping to produce a positive response after suffering a heavy 9-0 defeat in their group opener against record winners Lyon.

Match preview

Brann are competing in the Champions League main draw for the first time after they successfully navigated their way through qualifying.

The Norwegian side dispatched Lokomotiv Stara Zagora, Anderlecht and Glasgow City to book their place in a group that features record winners Lyon as well as Slavia Prague and St Polten.

Impressively, they extended their winning run in the competition to five games with a 2-1 away victory over St Polten last week thanks to goals from Rakel Engesvik and Natasha Anasi.

However, they were unable to claim another victory at the weekend, as they played out a 2-2 draw in their final league game of the season.

After finishing in fourth place in the Toppserien, Brann will have to lift the Champions League trophy to qualify for next season's competition, and while that is highly unlikely, a win on Wednesday would certainly boost their chances of reaching the quarter-finals.

In contrast to their hosts, Slavia Prague head into the midweek fixture off the back of a demoralising 9-0 defeat in their home meeting with Lyon.

After being blown away by five Lyon goals in the 25 minutes, St Polten went on to concede one more before the break, and their miserable evening was compounded when the French side took their tally to nine with three second-half efforts.

With their league action over until 2024, Slavia Prague have had a week to reflect on a result that ended a 20-game unbeaten run in all competitions.

While Lyon are widely expected to finish top of Group B, Slavia Prague can rival Brann and St Polten for second spot.

Having won all six of their competitive away games this season, the visitors will fancy their chances of taking at least a point from Wednesday's trip to Norway.

Team News

Brann midfielder Rikke Nyland is set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury earlier this month.

The hosts are also without the services of Andrine Hegerberg, who has not featured since July due to an injury issue.

Engesvik will be looking to score in a third consecutive game when she appears in a front three alongside Signe Gaupset and Larissa Crummer.

As for the visitors, they are unable to call upon long-term absentee Tereza Szewieczkova, while Tereza Krejcirikova is a doubt after missing the last two games.

After featuring as half-time substitutes against Lyon, Gabriela Slajsova and Tamara Moravkova are both pushing for starting places.

Marjolen Nekesa, who scored three goals in the qualifying tie against Cluj, could also be brought into the lineup for Wednesday's trip to Norway.

Brann Women possible starting lineup:
Mikalsen; Anasi, Ostenstad, Tynnila; Eikeland, Lie, Klelland, Lund; Gaupset, Engesvik; Crummer

Slavia Prague Women possible starting lineup:
Lukasova; Slajsova, Keene, Bartovicova, Xiao; Surnovska, McLaughlin; Stackpole, Cerna, Moravkova; Nekesa

SM words green background

We say: Brann Women 2-2 Slavia Prague Women

Slavia Prague would have been left reeling from last week's 9-0 defeat to Lyon, but an away clash with Brann should give them a chance to claim a positive result, and we think that they will do enough to hold their hosts to a draw.
