Romelu Lukaku brushes off talk of discontent among Belgium squad

Lukaku brushes off talk of Belgium discontent

Romelu Lukaku has brushed off suggestions that there is disharmony within the Belgium camp by insisting that it is "normal" for teams to have "discussions".

After the Red Devils' 2-0 defeat to Italy in their Euro 2016 opener, it was reported that players clashed with manager Marc Wilmots.

It has been alleged that Wilmots and goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois had a heated altercation after the head coach did not take kindly to his player's critical comments about Belgium's tactics.

However, after the team sealed a comfortable 3-0 win over the Republic of Ireland on Saturday, Lukaku, who scored twice, has claimed that the team are working together.

"The three points are the most important thing," Lukaku told ITV Sport. "We had to react as a team, as a group and everybody did their job. We need to improve [though] because we have a difficult game coming up [against Sweden]. I know what my qualities are and as a team player, you just want to win for the team.

"You're dealing with a lot of personalities and everybody wants to win, so in training players give their all sometimes, so there are discussions, but it's normal. If you want to be a big side everybody needs to be on the same page. We can only look forward."

Belgium are now second in Group E, three points behind group winners Italy and two above Sweden and the Republic of Ireland with one match left to play.
