Leverkusen close in on Bundesliga summit

Bayer Leverkusen have closed in on Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich with a 1-0 win over Borussia Monchengladbach at Borussia Park tonight.

In an uneventful first half, Patrick Hermann was the man who came closest to making the breakthrough for the hosts, with his volleyed effort from a well-worked corner having to be stopped by Bernd Leno in the Leverkusen goal.

Gladbach had another chance shortly after to find the back of the net while breaking forward, only for Raffael's pass to be intercepted to end the attack.

The contest livened up in the second period, and Leverkusen took the lead through Son Heung-Min, whose drilled strike left Marc-Andre ter Stegen with no chance.

Leverkusen almost doubled their lead after Stefan Kiessling was picked out by Roberto Hilbert from the right, though the striker dragged his effort wide.

With 10 minutes remaining, Gladbach began to show some urgency, as Max Kruse initially did well to hold onto the ball, before getting a shot away on goal which was turned behind by Leno.

Juan Arango also tried his luck from distance, only for Leno to again push it away, as time ran out on the hosts.
