Barnsley see off Millwall

Barnsley beat Millwall 1-0 at Oakwell thanks to Jim O'Brien's fourth-minute strike.

Barnsley beat Millwall 1-0 at Oakwell this afternoon, with the only goal of the Championship game coming in the fourth minute.

The hosts made a dream start to the game when Jim O'Brien rounded David Forde and slotted the ball into an empty net.

Chris O'Grady then shot over the bar, while Dale Jennings sent a 14th-minute effort straight at Forde as Barnsley threatened to extend their advantage.

DJ Campbell pounced on a mistake by the home side, but with Luke Steele stranded in no man's land, the forward skewed his effort well wide of the target.

Steele then tipped headers from Steve Morison and Scott McDonald round the post as Millwall looked for a way back into the game, but Barnsley held on to take a one-goal lead into the break.

Barnsley introduced Stephen Dawson in place of Jacob Mellis at the break, and the substitute saw his goal-bound effort deflected behind for a corner in the 53rd minute.

The home side continued to dominate proceedings, and O'Grady should have done better than swipe at thin air when the ball fell to him eight yards from goal in the 65th minute.

Millwall began to create chances for themselves, though, and Campbell saw his effort well saved by Steele with 20 minutes remaining.

With the visitors searching for an equaliser, Jennings and O'Grady found space to test Forde, but the keeper denied both efforts.

With just four minutes remaining, Shaun Williams bent his free kick inches wide of the post and Barnsley saw out the final few minutes to wrap up their first win in six games.
