Petr Cech defends Arsenal transfer philosophy

Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Cech defends the club's transfer philosophy despite their relative lack of business so far this summer.

Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Cech has defended the club's transfer activity this summer.

The Gunners spent £34m to sign Granit Xhaka from Borussia Monchengladbach towards the start of the transfer window, but the only new arrival since then has been 20-year-old defender Rob Holding.

A number of fans have vented their frustrations at the lack of business being conducted while many of their Premier League rivals continue to spend big, but Cech insists that there is no point in buying players just for the sake of it.

"I think you need to be buy players you need, you need to buy players that will improve the team and not to buy players just for buying," he told ESPN.

"That's the philosophy of the club. I've been here since last season and you can see that every time we bring in a player, it's a player we need, and the manager believes he improves the team. There is a core of the players who have been at Arsenal for years, and they know that is an advantage as well. People get to know each other, how to play together.

"[Xhaka] had been brilliant with Basel, he had been brilliant with Gladbach, so we bought a complete player who definitely improves our squad, and hopefully he will prove that on the pitch."

The Gunners begin the new Premier League season at home to Liverpool on August 14.
