Albania leapfrog Romania into Group A third place to remain alive in Euro 2016

Albania leapfrog Romania into third

Albania have given themselves a chance of reaching the knockout stages of Euro 2016 following their 1-0 win over Romania in Sunday's Group A clash at the Stade des Lumieres.

Anghel Iordanescu's charges were quickest out of the starting blocks and had several opportunities to open the scoring early on, with Ovidiu Hoban and Nicolae Stanciu both forcing saves from Etrit Berisha in the opening 10 minutes.

The pendulum soon swung the way of the Albanians, however, as Ledian Memushaj and Migjen Basha tested Ciprian Tatarusanu, but neither side was able to get onto the scoresheet in the opening 40 minutes.

Moments before half time, Memushaj lofted a cross into the box and into the path of Armando Sadiku, who nodded the ball into the bottom-right corner and gave Gianni De Biasi's side the lead going into the break.

Romania set about trying to score an equalising goal that would see them claw back into third place, but aside from Florin Andone's snap shot that smashed against the bar, they were unable to draw level.

The final whistle was celebrated wildly by the Albanian contingent as it saw them leapfrog Romania into third place and keeps them in contention for progress as one of the best third-placed finishers.
