Hello and welcome to live coverage of one of world football's most famous derbies, between
AC Milan and
Inter Milan. Both sides have had differing starts to the Serie A season, but that shouldn't detract from what should be a passionate game at the San Siro.
New Inter boss Stefano Pioli, who will take charge of his first match this evening following the sacking of Frank de Boer, has suggested that passion may be a decisive factor in this Milan derby. His side will need all the passion they can get after finding themselves in the bottom half of the table and 13 points behind leaders Juventus.
However, Milan are in a rich vein of form under the guidance of Vincenzo Montella, having won seven of their last nine games and are currently one point behind second-placed Roma. With further ado, let's bring you the latest team news.
AC MILAN XI: Donnarumma, Abate, Paletta, Gomez, De Sciglio, Kucka, Locatelli, Bonaventura, Suso, Bacca, Niang
INTER MILAN XI:Handanovic, Ambrosio, Miranda, Medel, Ansaldi, Brozovic, Kondogbia, Mario, Candreva, Icardi, Perisic
Well, neither side is lacking in attacking intent. the away side (in terms of tonight's fixture) have controversial forward Mauro Icardi and Ivan Perisic leading the line. However, Pioli's problem could be sorting out the defence. Ex-Cardiff player Gary Medel comes into the Nerazzurri's backline alongside Cristian Ansaldi. For Milan, they boast a three-man forward line of Carlos Bacca, M'Baye Niang and Suso, once of Liverpool.
The San Siro is a sell-out tonight and the atmosphere is already electric. Pioli has been quick to focus on his side's intensity in the build up to the game, but they will have to go some way to match the supporters.
PREDICTION: Well, as kickoff nears in the Derby della Madonnina, it is about time for a prediction and it is hard to see past a victory for the Rossoneri. However, I'd expect a close game.
Rossoneri fans has just unveiled a colossal banner in tribute to their departing owner Silvio Berlusconi and the success he brought to the club (when he wasn't allegedly involved in sex scandals). Nevertheless, you can't fault the choreography from both sides. The teams are out on the pitch at the San Siro.
KICKOFF: We're underway in the Milan derby. This should be a cracker!
Almost an early chance for Inter. What is clear is Milan's willingness to play out from the back. Donnarumma was calm under pressure with his first touches.
Cries for a penalty from the Rossoneri fans and Niang goes down inside the box. You could argue that the challenge from Medel would warrant a free kick anywhere else on the pitch, but the appeals are waved away.
Perisic looks to torment Gomez on the left flank, but the defender does enough to slow the Croat down. Abate eventually clears for a corner which comes to nothing.
Again, Perisic finds space to get a cross into the box, but his delivery is low and fails to find a teammate. Another appeal for a penalty soon after as Abate gets involved with Joao Mario.
Candreva has people to aim for in the box, only to hit a poor ball over Donnarumma's crossbar. He then puts Locatelli under pressure with a bad pass out from the back, but the youngster just about turns out of danger.
CHANCE! Kondogbia goes close with a half chance. The French midfielder heads just wide from a Brozovic's corner. Inter have made the more positive start.
CHANCE! Perisic should test the keeper. A cross from right is deflected into his path by the outstretched Icardi. His shot is tame, however, and Donnarumma collects with ease.
As fireworks go off in the stands, Joao Mario wastes another chance to probe the Milan defence. Locatelli managed to get goal side of the Portuguese star and snuff out any danger.
Icardi has been full of effort, but yet to threaten the goal himself so far. He has scored against every Serie A team except Milan.
YELLOW CARD: Kondogbia goes into the book for a tackle on Bonaventura and the referee gestures that's his second foul. I think that's a bit harsh.
YELLOW CARD: Now Kucka picks up a yellow! This game has a habit of ending with a red card of two. It's not hard to see why!
CHANCE! Best chance of the game so far as D'Ambrosio produces a peach of cross. It beats Icardi, but finds Perisic, who tries to place his header and misses the target.
CLOSE! None of Milan's backline follows the run of Kondogbia from the ensuing corner. The former Monaco midfielder rises highest and his header is only just wide of the right post. Donnarumma was rooted to spot.
This game has really come to life and you wouldn't know that Inter are the team in 11th place!
SHOT! The Nerazzurri are popping it around with aplomb and Candreva decides to take a shot at goal. It's only a few feet away from the Milan goal. They are living dangerously at the moment and need to cut out silly mistakes.
YELLOW CARD! De Sciglio goes into the book after two reckless challenges in the space of a minute. The first one arguably merited a card!
It seems to be that referee Paolo Tagliavento is giving players one warning before brandishing the card. If that is the case, there are a few players lucky not to be booked.
CHANCE! Yet again Perisic squanders an opportunity to give Inter the lead. He is found with a cross from the left and, from only a few yards out, heads wide. I wonder if Icardi would miss these chances if given to him.
INTER SUB: Medel looks disconsolate as he trudges off with a knee injury. Murillo on in his place.
MISS! I spoke too soon. Now Icardi drags a shot wide. Nevertheless, Inter are creating almost all the chances and I can't remember much from Milan since the early minutes.
SHOT! Wow! From nothing, De Sciglio tries his luck from distance and Handanovic, who has done little since the kickoff, has his palms stung by the shot. More like it from the Rossoneri.
GOAL! AC Milan 1-0 Inter Milan (Suso)
Suso scores his first goal in this stadium and what a goal it is. Handanovic was well beaten by the immaculate strike from the ex-Liverpool attacker. However, it is almost certainly against the run of play. Moments earlier, Bacca fluffed a great chance with a timid shot. Not that it matters now!
Huge roars as Bacca appears to be in on goal. The Colombian was in an offside position, but Inter perhaps need the half-time whistle to gather their thoughts.
One minute of added time at the San Siro...
HALF TIME: AC Milan 1-0 Inter Milan
Time to take a breath! An incident-packed first 45 minutes comes to an end and AC Milan will consider themselves fortunate to be ahead, but ahead they are. Inter need to respond and to stop wasting chances. In truth, Inter could have put daylight between themselves and their city rivals.
As it stands, Milan will be five points behind Juve at the end of the weekend, but Inter will be buoyed by their first-half performance at least and the prize, should they emerge victorious, is the chance to move level on points with eighth-placed Fiorentina.
STATS: Inter have certainly had more possession (63%) and more of the attacking play (10 shots to Milan's three), but the Rossoneri have hit the target with all of their attempts, while the Nerazzuri have not tested Donnarumma enough, having only had two efforts on target.
BENCH WATCH: Inter only have two changes left to make after the early loss of Medel, but do have attacking options of Jovetic and Eder to choose from. Meanwhile, Milan have Lapadula in reserve. There were some calls from Milan fans to start him instead of Bacca. Only moments before both sides start the second period at the San Siro
Obviously, it's not that Luis Suarez who scored in a Milan derby, but the former Spain international.
KICKOFF: We're back underway in Milan. The Inter end is awash with flags and fireworks. They are certainly not lacking in support.
Brozovic tries to start another attack for the away team, but De Sciglio intercepts his cross and Donnarumma gathers with ease.
Donnarumma belies his age again as he collects Brozovic's corner and clears out of attack. It's not hard to see why many are tipping him as Buffon's successor for the next 20 years.
YELLOW CARD: Well Ansaldi was not given a warning and the referee breaks his rule to book the full back.
CLOSE! Bonaventura nearly doubles Milan's lead. His shot is saved, but he tries to rouse the home fans behind the goal.
GOAL! AC Milan 1-1 Inter Milan (Candreva)
Another stunner! This time from Candreva. A fabulous right-footed shot beats Donnarumma to his left side. Milan players are remonstrating that it should have been a throw in, but it is what Inter deserve so far.
SHOT! Shot is the loosest word I can use as Paletta shapes to shoot at goal nearly picks out his mate in the stand. I can think of some words to describe that, but it's a family show!
GOAL! AC Milan 2-1 Inter Milan (Suso)
Milan retake the lead and Suso is slowly turning himself into a cult hero in these parts. If you are trying to picture the goal, think Kinkladze circa Manchester City and you'd be about right. After working past two defenders, his cushioned side-footed shot was too good for Handanovic.
Inter still have a chance to get back into this game and just to compose themselves. I wonder if Banega might be another option for Pioli.
Ansaldi escapes a second red card for a poor challenge. I wonder if this game could boil over at some point. Sendings off are common in this fixture!
INTER SUB: Unsurprisingly, Ansaldi is hooked and Nagatomo replaces the fortunate full-back.
CHANCE! Another chance for Inter and yet again it's Perisic. The Croat receives the ball from Candreva and fires just wide with a volley.
CHANCE! Another opportunity for the Nerazzurri and this time Gomez tries to play Icardi offside. The Argentine has space to shoot and takes an air shot as a grateful Donnarumma collects.
MILAN SUB: Bacca comes off with Fernandez in his place. Expect Niang to play more centrally for the remaining minutes.
Kondogbia scythes down Bonaventura around 35 yards out. No second yellow card for the Frenchman, but Bonaventura is sizing up a shot here.
Instead it's Kucka looking to smash the ball from distance. His effort is near the corner flag!
INTER SUB: Jovetic is on at last in place of the Brozovic. Can the forgotten City forward make a difference?
Donnarumma almost creates a chance as he tries to stop a corner from Jovetic's deflected shot. He gets there in the end, but I wonder if that was necessary.
YELLOW CARD: Jovetic is the fifth player to go into the book for bringing down Bonaventura.
MILAN SUB: Lapadula comes on and Niang's brief foray in the centre forward role comes to an end.
It feels like Inter are struggling to create more opportunites. It feels as though their derby hopes are slipping away slowly.
CHANCE! No sooner do I start to write off Inter than they almost dig out an equaliser. Perisic slides a low cross in down the left and Icardi cannot get enough of a boot on the ball and Donnarumma manages to hold on.
All of a sudden, it's Inter who have Milan penned in their own half. The spot of possession comes to nothing, but Pioli continues to bark out the orders. He clearly senses that Inter can snatch something.
MILAN SUB: Bonaventura is off and Chelsea loanee Mario Pasalic comes on for the final two minutes.
Kucka fluffs a clearance and Inter go again, but a poor pass from Jovetic sees the move breakdown amid groans from the Nerazzurri support. His cameo has not gone well so far!
Three minutes of added time left as Inter continue to look for an equaliser.
GOAL! AC Milan 2-2 Inter Milan (Perisic)
Perisic finally takes a chance and Milan only have themselves to blame after failing to initially clear a corner. The Croat pounced at the back post to surely earn a draw for Inter.
FULL TIME: AC Milan 2-2 Inter Milan
Well, I'd argue that was a classic. No shortage of chances and talking points as well as a late twist. Inter probably deserved a point, but they did look beaten with 10 minutes to go. Quite the start for Stefano Pioli. How will he fare over the remainder of the season? You can follow all the action from Serie A and across Europe with Sports Mole. However, for now it's good night from me.
