South Korea's Kim Jiyeon wins individual sabre final

South Korea's Kim Jiyeon beats Sofya Velikaya in the gold medal match to win the individual sabre title at the Olympics.

Kim Jiyeon has won the gold medal in the women's individual sabre with a 15-9 victory over Russia's Sofya Velikaya.

The South Korean asserted her dominance early in the contest, with her opponent having little say in the outcome of the first period with an 8-5 triumph for Jiyeon.

Velikaya struggled to recover from the setback and the second period followed in much the same way as the first as Jiyeon won 7-4 to secure the gold medal.

Ukraine's Olga Kharlan won a bronze medal earlier in the evening with a comfortable 15-10 victory over American competitor Mariel Zagunis.
