Michael van Gerwen edges out Gary Anderson to retain European title

Michael van Gerwen beats Gary Anderson 11-10 to retain his European Championship title.

Michael van Gerwen has retained his European Championship title after recording a dramatic 11-10 victory over Gary Anderson.

After defeating Peter Wright and Adrian Lewis in the semi-finals, the two best players in the world threw up a pulsating encounter that including 17 maximums.

It was Anderson who opened up a narrow advantage during the opening stages of the match and he maintained his lead into the second half of the encounter as Van Gerwen remained a step behind the 2015 world champion.

After moving into a 10-7 lead, it appeared as though Anderson would win the tournament for the first time in his career, but the Scot's scoring let him down at the vital moment and Van Gerwen stepped in.

In the deciding leg, Anderson could only leave 80 after 15 darts, before Van Gerwen checked out 75 to claim the title for the second successive year.
