Michael van Gerwen claims third European Championship title

Michael van Gerwen beats Mensur Suljovic by an 11-1 scoreline to win his third European Championship title.

Michael van Gerwen has recorded an 11-1 victory over Mensur Suljovic to claim his third European Championship.

The world number one was in ruthless form in Hasselt on Sunday evening as he stormed to victory over Suljovic, who was playing in his first PDC Major final.

Van Gerwen survived a match dart against Simon Whitlock in the opening round but since that contest, he has not looked back and capped his tournament off with an average of 111.62 in the final.

The Dutchman hit five 180s and missed just four darts at a double as he gave Suljovic little opportunity to get legs on the board.

Despite the manner of the defeat, Suljovic will be delighted with his work over the weekend having defeated both Phil Taylor and Peter Wright earlier on Sunday.

The Austrian also moves up to a career-high standing of seven in the PDC Order of Merit.
