Michael Smith secures win in fifth UK Open qualifier

Michael Smith wins the fifth UK Open qualifier with a 6-5 victory over Adrian Lewis in Wigan.

Michael Smith recorded a final-leg triumph over Adrian Lewis to win the fifth UK Open qualifier in Wigan.

The 24-year-old, who is regarded as one of the most talented youngsters in the sport, held his nerve to move up to 20th in the PDC Order of Merit.

After comfortable wins over Mark Webster and Simon Whitlock, the St Helens thrower came through a close contest with Vincent van der Voort before seeing off Daryl Gurney in the last four.

HIs final with Lewis was a closely-fought affair, but, after sharing the opening eight legs, Smith moved one away from victory with a 127 checkout, only to see The Jackpot respond with a 118 finish of his own.

Despite Lewis having the throw in the final leg, Smith came through to record his fourth Pro Tour success.
