Michael van Gerwen battles to a 3-1 victory over Joe Cullen to reach round two of the PDC World Championship.

Defending champion Michael van Gerwen has survived an early scare against Joe Cullen to reach the second round of the PDC World Championship.

The Dutchman was forced to come from behind after his English opponent produced a 161 checkout, but he went on to hit eight 180s on his way to a 3-1 triumph.

The biggest surprise of the night came in the final match of night as Spain's Cristo Reyes recovered from letting slip a 2-0 advantage against Wes Newton to prevail in a last-leg decider in the fifth set.

The tournament had opening with three-time world champion John Part being dumped out of the competition Isle of Wight-based debutant Keegan Brown, who held his nerve in a deciding set to move through to a match with either Adrian Lewis or Dave Pallett.

In the battle of the Dutch world champions, Jelle Klaasen produced one of his best performances at Alexandra Palace to overcome Christian Kist by a 3-1 scoreline.
