Gary Anderson retains world title in thrilling final against Adrian Lewis

Gary Anderson beats Adrian Lewis 7-5 to retain his World Championship title at Alexandra Palace.

Gary Anderson has successfully defended his world title with a 7-5 triumph over Adrian Lewis at Alexandra Palace.

Anderson averaged just 79 during a one-sided first set that Lewis won with ease, but the Scot averaged in excess of 120 in the second as he finally found his rhythm.

Lewis started the third on the front foot, but Anderson replied with three legs in a row, with the set being sealed with a 75 checkout.

Anderson was in control of the fourth but a miscount proved costly as Lewis stepped in to level the match at 2-2, before also taking the fifth in a deciding leg.

However, Anderson bossed the middle stages of the contest, winning three sets in a row to open up a 5-3 lead, before Lewis responded with a whitewash in the ninth.

Anderson needed an instant reply, and he provided it, taking the 10th set courtesy of an 108 checkout to leave him one away from the title.

Lewis rallied with four successive legs but back came Anderson in ruthless fashion, hitting a 170 checkout to take him to within one leg of victory before closing out the contest on double 12 - just like he did against Phil Taylor 12 months ago.
