Michael van Gerwen and Adrian Lewis progress safely through to the second round of the European Championship.

Michael van Gerwen began his bid to win the European Championship with a comfortable victory over Kurt van de Rijk.

The Dutchman was far from his best, but he had too much for his Belgian opponent, coming through the game with a 6-1 triumph.

He was joined in the last 16 by Adrian Lewis, who had to come from behind to record a 6-4 victory over Mensur Suljovic.

Jelle Klaasen produced the surprise result of the night after he won the final four legs to beat Wes Newton 6-4, with Kevin Painter moving past John Part by the same scoreline.

Mervyn King and Andy Hamilton came through last-leg deciders against Ronnie Baxter and Terry Jenkins respectively, while there were also successes for Justin Pipe and Paul Nicholson.
