Van Gerwen beats Taylor at Grand Slam

Michael van Gerwen has defeated Phil Taylor 10-5 to continue his impressive form and move through to the quarter-finals of the Grand Slam of Darts.

The World Grand Prix champion shared the opening eight legs with the 15-time world champion before hitting a 130 checkout on the way to winning four legs in a row.

Taylor capitalised on five missed darts at a double by the Dutchman to reduce the deficit to three, but Van Gerwen struck in the next two legs to set up a last-eight clash with Scott Waites.

Waites hit eight 180s as he edged a thrilling contest by 10 legs to eight, with Scotland's Robert Thornton having an average of over 103.

Kevin Painter and Dean Winstanley will meet in the quarter-finals after they both recorded 10-5 victories in their second-round ties.

Painter took advantage of a series of missed doubles from Mervyn King to comfortably see off the World Grand Prix runner-up, whilst Winstanley comfortably saw off the challenge of the PDC Youth Order of Merit winner in the opening game of the night.
