Phil Taylor stunned by "phenomenal" Michael van Gerwen

Phil Taylor hails the "phenomenal" Michael van Gerwen as the Dutchman beats the veteran 16-13 to clinch the Grand Slam of Darts crown.

Phil Taylor has paid tribute to the "phenomenal" Michael van Gerwen after losing to the Dutchman in Sunday's Grand Slam of Darts final in Wolverhampton.

The 16-time world champion lost 16-13 to Van Gerwen as the 26-year-old won an elusive Grand Slam title to complete his collection of PDC majors.

He told PDC.TV: "I missed too many doubles and it's my own fault, but I'm proud to have reached the final but I'm disappointed that I lost.

"I gave him chances and he took them, and fair play to him - it's set him up now for the rest of the year. He's a phenomenal darts player."

As runner-up, 55-year-old Taylor picked up £52,500 in prize money.
