The favourite to succeed Graeme Smith as captain of South Africa's Test side, AB de Villiers, has said that he is unsure if he will be given the role.
Smith, 33, yesterday made the shock announcement that he would retire at the end of the current Test series against Australia.
As vice-captain to Smith and also captain of the Proteas' one-day side, De Villiers is the obvious choice to lead Test cricket's number-one ranked side.
When asked by Cricket Australia if he would take over, De Villiers said: "I'm not sure. We'll have to wait and see what happens.
"I'll have a few discussions with the coach and team selectors. If it does come my way it'd be a huge honour."
Twenty20 skipper Faf du Plessis is another potential replacement, with the right-hander set to lead South Africa in the upcoming World Twenty20 in Bangladesh.
Smith's international career came to a tame end today when he was dismissed for just three runs in his final innings.
