Pakistan battle back to earn draw in first Test with Sri Lanka

Pakistan battle to draw

Mohammad Hafeez hit an unbeaten 80 as Pakistan fought their way to a draw with Sri Lanka in the first Test match in Abu Dhabi.

Sri Lanka's Angelo Mathews and Prasanna Jayawardene took their side to 480-5 before declaring and set Pakistan a mammoth 302 to win with less than a day's play remaining.

Pakistan openers Khurram Manzoor and Ahmed Shehzad survived the first five overs before lunch safely, but Manzoor (8) edged Suranga Lakmal behind soon after the break.

Shehzad, making his Test debut, reached his half-century just before tea, but his innings of 55 runs came to close in the third over after tea when he was trapped lbw by Rangana Herath.

Following this dismissal, Hafeez (80) and Younus Khan (13) defended their wickets as the first Test meandered predictably towards a draw.
