Root, Ballance put England in strong position

England have gone to tea on 253 for three on the third day of the second Test against the West Indies in Grenada, trailing the hosts by just 46 runs.

The tourists suffered a setback when they lost Alastair Cook, who is still searching for that 26th Test century, and Ian Bell in quick succession.

Joe Root and Gary Ballance, however, went on to draw the sting from the West Indies attack with an unbeaten 89 runs for the fourth wicket.

Earlier, England's first century opening partnership for more than two years helped them to 143-1 in reply to the West Indies' first-innings total of 299 at lunch.
