South Africa thrash England to level Test series

South Africa record a 340-run win over England in the second Test match at Trent Bridge, a result which levels the four-game series.

South Africa have recorded a 340-run win over England in the second Test match at Trent Bridge.

England went into the day needing to bat out two days or complete a 474-run chase, but neither was a realistic possibility and they succumbed tamely for 133 in just 44.2 overs.

Alastair Cook and Keaton Jennings had been required to give the hosts a solid start but the dismissal of Jennings for just three led to further wickets as Gary Ballance (4) and Joe Root (8) both departed cheaply.

The middle order of Jonny Bairstow (16), Ben Stokes (18) and Moeen Ali (27) offered slightly more resistance on a worsening pitch after Cook had gone for 42, but it was only going to be a matter of time before South Africa sealed the win.

Stuart Broad made just five, and after Mark Wood and James Anderson both went for ducks from four balls and two balls respectively, the tourists were able to celebrate a thoroughly convincing win.

Vernon Philander was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 3-24, but Keshav Maharaj contributed 3-42 with Duanne Olivier and Chris Morris adding two wickets apiece.

With the four-Test series now level, the next contest begins at The Oval on Thursday, July 27.
