England have taken a strong hold of the third Test against India in Kolkata by finishing the day on 216-1.

The visitors took to the crease after bowling the home side all out for 316 in the morning session and it was up to openers Alastair Cook and Nick Compton to set the pace for England in their first innings.

The pair managed to find their rhythm swiftly, leaving the Indian spinners frustrated and without a wicket in the morning and afternoon sessions.

Cook was the standout player for the away side as he broke two records in quick succession by becoming the youngest ever player to reach 7,000 Test match runs and securing his 23rd century, which is more than any other player has claimed in an England shirt.

Compton reached a feat of his own by getting his first Test half-century but the 29-year-old was stopped in his tracks on 57 runs after he was dismissed for an lbw by Pragyan Ojha in the evening session.

Jonathan Trott came to the crease to form a new partnership with Cook, who managed to reach stumps on 136 runs, while Trott remains not out on 21.
