Half-centuries from Alastair Cook and Ian Bell guided England to victory during their opening Test match against the West Indies at Lord's this afternoon.

Having resumed the final day on 10-2, hosts England soon lost the wickets of Jonathan Trott and Kevin Pietersen for 13 runs each to the bowling of Kemar Roach and Shannon Gabriel respectively.

That brought Bell to the crease and the Warwickshire batsman produced a stubborn performance alongside Cook to help England reach the required victory target of 191.

Cook was not present at the end though as he was caught by Kirk Edwards off the bowling of captain Darren Sammy with England needing just two more runs to seal the win.

The dismissal of vice-captain Cook saw debutant Jonny Bairstow come onto the pitch and the Yorkshire batsman was alongside Bell when he the winning runs were struck with five wickets to spare.

Bell ended the innings with 63 runs to his name.
