England beat South Africa by nine wickets

England have bounced back from their Champions Trophy heartbreak by comfortably beating South Africa by nine wickets in Southampton.

The hosts, defeated by Pakistan in the semi-finals of the competition last week, successfully chased down a target of 143 runs in the first of three Twenty20 meetings with the Proteas.

Despite the best efforts of AB de Villiers and Farhaan Behardien, who put together a 110-run stand, South Africa could only manage 142-3 at the Rose Bowl.

England made light work of their opponents, as Jonny Bairstow (60*) and Alex Hales (47*) guided their side to victory with 33 deliveries to spare.

The second match takes place in Taunton on Friday evening.
