After being thrashed by 10 wickets in the first ODI, England were looking to bounce back when they faced India at Lord's on Thursday.
They looked set to head towards another defeat after they were bowled out for 246, leaving the hosts with what many thought was a below-par score at the halfway stage.
However, England's total proved to be a match-winning score as India were skittled out for 146 inside 39 overs, with Reece Topley claiming six of the Indian wickets.
After Jasprit Bumrah recorded the third-best figures by an Indian bowler in an ODI in the first match of the series, Topley created more history in the second game by finishing with the best ODI figures of any England bowler in history.
With his first 50-over win as full-time captain secured, Buttler will now be targeting his first series victory as England skipper.

Meanwhile, India will be looking for a positive response after losing the second ODI by 100 runs, ensuring that the series is level ahead of Sunday's decider.
India cruised to victory in the first match of the series, chasing down 110 after bowling England out in 25.2 overs to condemn their opponents to their first 10-wicket ODI defeat on home turf.
Following the win in the T20 International series, the visitors entered the second ODI with the chance to wrap up back-to-back series victories over England.
After putting their opponent into bat and bowling them out for 246 with one over left, India would have been confident of their chances of victory.
However, the batting performance left a lot to be desired, with one of the top order reaching double figures, while the final four wickets fell for six runs as India sunk to a disappointing defeat.
Despite batting poorly on Thursday, India still have the chance to win their first 50-over series in England since 2014 at Old Trafford.

England have named the same lineup for the first two matches of the ODI series, and they could continue with an unchanged side for Sunday's contest.
Despite beating India on Thursday, a batting order that contains Jonny Bairstow, Joe Root, Ben Stokes and Buttler will be looking for an improvement in the final game, with no England batsman yet to score a half-century in the series.
Topley is the only England bowler to have taken more than one wicket in the series, and the 28-year-old will continue to lead the seam attack in the third and final ODI.
Meanwhile, Moeen Ali and Liam Livingstone will provide the spin options, while Root can also offer some part-time spin if required.
