Michael Vaughan urges selectors to pick Monty Panesar for the Test series' against Pakistan and Sri Lanka in the new year.

Former captain Michael Vaughan has urged selectors to pick Monty Panesar for England's winter tour.

Andy Flower's side face Test series against Pakistan and Sri Lanka in the new year, and Vaughan believes that Panesar's county form for Sussex should earn him a recall to the international set-up, ahead of Samit Patel.

"Spin plays such a prominent role in that part of the world so I just hope they go with the next best and don't go for someone like Samit Patel," Vaughan told Metro.

"I want them to go for the next best spinner and in my eyes that's Monty Panesar. He went with England to the Ashes, he's had a good year for Sussex and I don't see how the selectors can change that.

"There's no-one else with the quality of Panesar. If (Graeme) Swann got injured then you need your next best spinner. That's Monty."

England begin their one-day series against India on Friday, October 14.
