Batsman Jonathan Trott admits that a lack of big first innings totals has cost England in 2012.

Jonathan Trott has admitted that England need to post bigger totals if they want to begin winning Test matches again.

Last week's 75-run loss to Sri Lanka was England's fourth Test defeat in a row and Trott believes that the lack of big totals have cost them.

The Warwickshire batsman told Sky Sports News: "When we have won Test matches we have scored big runs.

"It is obviously a common factor in winning Test matches. Our thoughts are no different - we still want to go out there and put big totals up in first innings.

"We haven't been able to do that in the last couple of games in the UAE and here but we are no different as a team, we haven't changed our way of playing, it just hasn't worked out for us."

England must beat Sri Lanka in the second Test in Colombo to secure their status as the number one Test team in the world.
