Pietersen: 'I thought Maynard would replace me'

Batsman Kevin Pietersen has claimed that he thought Tom Maynard could have replaced him in the England Twenty20 side.

The Lions player died tragically after being struck by a District Line tube train, and Pietersen has said that he suggested the player as his future replacement in the England limited-overs team.

In an interview in the Daily Mail, Pietersen said: "I was speaking to Andy Flower and Alastair Cook just a few weeks ago about who I thought could replace me in the one-day side and I said 'Tom Maynard in Twenty20'. He was a proper player."

Hundreds paid their respects at the player's funeral last week.
