England batsman Joe Root praises "fantastic" teammates on day one against India

Joe Root praises England's "fantastic" performance after ending day one of the first Test against India on 311-4 in Rajkot.

England batsman Joe Root has claimed that he and his teammates are in a "good position" following a "fantastic" display on day one of the first Test against India in Rajkot.

The 25-year-old scored 124 off 180 balls to help the tourists reach stumps on 311-4.

Moeen Ali also played a hand in shaping the early stages of the Test as he ended the day 99 not out.

"The way we played throughout the day was fantastic," Root told Sky Sports News. "We always thought that seam would be useful early on. The guys handled it well and that allowed the boys in the middle order to build partnerships.

"I look forward to watching Mo bat all day tomorrow too. It's pleasing, something to build on and a good position to be in."

The Test in Rajkot is the first of five in the series.
