James Anderson out of first Test

A calf injury rules bowler James Anderson out of England's opening Test encounter against South Africa in Durban.

England bowler James Anderson has been ruled out of the first Test against South Africa.

It was revealed yesterday that the 33-year-old was a doubt for the Boxing Day encounter because of a calf complaint.

He was sent for a scan on the problem, the results of which have confirmed that he will not be fit enough to bowl in Durban.

Anderson will now be assessed ahead of the second Test in Cape Town, which gets underway on January 2.

Early reports have suggested that Chris Woakes is in line to replace England's leading Test wicket-taker of all time.
